When we look up the definition of “nurse” in the dictionary, we find something along the lines of “someone who provides care for a sick person.” While contemplating it appears simple, I believe that nursing encompasses more than that simple definition. Being a nurse is a highly rewarding and influential profession. Nurses provide care for people who are ill, injured, in pain, dying, grieving, or experiencing birth, growth, aging, or poor health. They not only provide care for individuals who are ill, but also promote health, prevent disease, and educate the public.

While we all recognize that nursing is a field dedicated to assisting others, I believe that becoming a nurse requires more than a desire to succeed. A nurse’s personality must be open, strong, determined, thoughtful, and caring. These characteristics would reflect positively on the nurse and would facilitate patient care.

I believe that I am qualified for this field because, since I was a child, I have desired to have a positive impact on people’s lives. I’ve always felt a sense of obligation to care for someone, knowing that I have the ability and the choice to do so. Growing up in the Philippines shaped my desire to care for others significantly. Throughout my life, I have witnessed various types of people living in poverty, including infants, children, the elderly, and even disabled people. Each day, I saw them on the streets begging for money to treat their ailing relatives. I feel so helpless whenever I see them. I desired to assist them but lacked the necessary knowledge since I was a child. It wasn’t until I moved to the United States that I realized nursing was the ideal career choice for me. Moving here made me aware of how desperately poor other countries, such as the Philippines, are in terms of health care. It increased my awareness of the situation, and now that I am more mature, I am aware that I can do something to help. Becoming a nurse would not eliminate poverty, but it would alleviate some of the suffering. Another factor that influenced my decision to become a nurse is the fact that my sister is a nursing assistant. She suggested that I take up the profession. Her hospital stories inspired me and convinced me that nursing is truly for me. She asserts that the sensation of giving yourself to a complete stranger in their hour of greatest need is unlike any other on earth.

I am convinced that I am qualified to become a nurse. I am forthright and communicative, which are also necessary characteristics for a nurse. Nurses serve as the primary point of contact between the patient and the doctor. Additionally, they frequently interact with family members by demonstrating empathy for their loved one’s illness. Personally, I find it extremely empowering to have the opportunity to influence someone every day. My words, actions, and attitude can all contribute to another person’s healing, and that is something I will remember for the rest of my life. Nursing is one of the few professions that benefits both the patient and the nurse. It is an exciting, ever-changing, diverse field that provides daily opportunities to learn something new. The work is difficult, but at the end of the day, I will say that this is the path I chose and I am proud of it; then, I will recall the sensation of assisting a complete stranger, and I will feel rewarded.
