Data Management Paper

Amazon.com Inc., also known as Amazon, is a global technology company that deals with e-commerce, cloud computing, digital streaming, and artificial intelligence. Statistics indicate Amazon as one of the big four technology companies in the United States. It has been among the most influential economic and cultural forces in the US. The company was founded in 1994 by Jeff Bezos and is headquartered in Seattle. Initially, Amazon started as an online bookstore, selling college textbooks. Over time, the company added electronics, furniture, and jewelry. Now, the mega-retailer sells just about anything a customer could want online (Khalisa, 2020).

The mission statement of Amazon.com has always centered on its primary focus—the online Amazon.com customer. The mission of the company is to ” continually raise the bar of the customer experience by using the internet and technology to help consumers find, discover and buy anything, and empower businesses and content creators to maximize their success.” Amazon aims to be Earth’s most customer-centric company. According to studies, Amazon Company uses vast amounts of data to ensure customers experience success. Founder Jeff Bezos has publicly referred to the Amazon.com mission statement as the guiding force behind his leadership decisions many times in the company’s history. It can be concluded that Amazon.com’s success as the top internet retailing company in the world is due at least in part to its unwavering commitment to this mission and the daily execution of it (Khalisa, 2020).

Amazon is a data-driven company, and it uses Big Data in practice. Currently, it uses Big Data gathered from customers while they browse to build and fine-tune its recommendation engine. The more Amazon knows more about an individual, the more it can predict what they want to buy. Once the retailer knows what the individual might want, it can streamline the process of persuading them to buy it – for example, by recommending various products instead of making you search through the whole catalog.

Notably, Amazon collects data from users as they navigate the site, such as the time spent browsing each page. The retailer also makes use of external datasets, such as census data, for gathering demographic details. Amazon’s core business is handled in its central data warehouse, consisting of Hewlett-Packard servers running Oracle on Linux. This kind of data management helps Amazon achieve its mission to be customer-centric (Khalisa, 2020).

One of the critical requirements for handling Big Data is that Amazon is an advanced information technology background. The company hires IT professionals who are skilled in handling and programing information. Thus, it gives them a competitive advantage in the company. According to studies, IT professionals can handle programmatic and computational realms of big data analytics. Besides, multiple technologies are required to make Bid data a success at Amazon. For instance, Microsoft Excel, SQL, and R are essential tools. At the enterprise level, SPSS, Cognos, SAS, MATLAB are essential to learning, as are Python, Scala, Linux, Hadoop, and HIVE (Khalisa, 2020).

Besides, another requirement that can increase the efficiency and quality of Big Data is Analysis of data and insights would be useless if it cannot be applied to a business setting. All big data analysts need to have a strong understanding of the business and domain they operate. Big data analysts can identify relevant opportunities and threats based on their business expertise. Consider the introduction of iPads. When they were introduced, the digital publishing industry was all set for disruption.

Nevertheless, outsiders could not realize the transformation that was possible. It took industry expertise and connections to usher in the era of digital publishing. Domain expertise enables big data analysts to communicate effectively with different stakeholders. Consider recommending that new employees be added to a factory floor.

In conclusion, companies like Amazon require mastery of critical skills to manage Big Data. Various workers in the company have roles in managing company data.  IT professionals have an advantage in learning new programming languages and technologies. Others will need to put in more effort to learn computing skills and technologies. But, softer skills such as business experience and domain expertise level the playing ground. Mastery of such skills will contribute to the efficiency, adaptability, and flexibility of the company. It also increases scalability, ease of use, and maintainability.
