Critical appraisal of research
Upon a thorough analysis of the four studies, various concepts stood out to be critical when reviewing and evaluating nurses’ burnout in healthcare especially during pandemic periods such as COVID-19 pandemic. Health professionals have a slightly higher rate of burnout than most occupational classes. The burnout of nurses is projected to increase scarcity of nurses and critical staffing problems. Work engagement elucidated the most variance in burnout as personal accomplishment, emotional exhaustion and depersonalization among nurses. The predictors to nurse burnout is critical globally in nursing field and attention need to be given. The hospital system wherein nurses operate is a crucial aspect which may lead to the burnout syndrome. The duties undertaken and the role played by nursing workers, along with the types of treatments, are both dependent on the style of service delivered and could even impact the development of this syndrome.
The outcome of the COVID-19 epidemic tested national and global health structures that could seriously impact the wellbeing of health staff on the frontlines, when overwhelmed. Frontline nurses faced a series of obstacles for mental wellbeing, in particular burnout and anxiety, demanding greater focus and support from policy-makers. In terms of action, participants and performance, the analysis was straightforward. Intervention strategies to avoid and/or mitigate the mental burden of this occupational group are interesting to examine and come up with the best strategy.
The four articles support an in-depth exploration of the nurses’ diverse demographic backgrounds as well as their mental health statuses over this outbreak as an intervention strategy. The use of a multidimensional framework for stress management can help build resilience amongst nurses, and taking into account the multi-faceted essence of stress response could be crucial in the nursing field. The nursing administrator and nurses will be more comfortable with its positions, when the overwhelming aspect of its job can be minimized. In turn, this role satisfaction as well as work engagement could enhance the management behaviors for employees which enhance the working environment. Further research into the issue is also called for and crucial in stress management process.
